Goochland supervisors scheduled to appropriate nearly 100K in forestry grants

GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Forestry is set to distribute millions into the commonwealth's cities and counties -- all to help provide public education, outdoor recreation projects or forest preservation.

Goochland County alone will receive nearly $100,000, as the Board of Supervisors plans to adopt a resolution accepting and appropriating this money to the Grounds Management Department and its 2026 fiscal year budget.

Time is ticking, however. The state government requires Goochland to use the money by the end of the year.

To be exact, Virginia has awarded Goochland $98,496.

It's a share of the forestry department's $2.5 million Forest Sustainability Fund which allocates grants to all corners of the commonwealth.

While canvassing a neighborhood, 8News spoke with a 20-year Goochland resident who recommended that his county government build parks.

Whether they listen or not, Goochland officials and groundskeepers will have about six months to figure out what to do.

According to the board's July 1 agenda, the money can only be "used solely for public education or for projects related to outdoor recreation or forest preservation."

Along with other agenda items, the supervisors are scheduled to adopt that resolution at the county administrative building on Tuesday, July 1, at 3 p.m.
