Grace period ends for speed camera citations near Chesterfield elementary school, speeding drivers to be ticketed

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The grace period for a speed camera near a Chesterfield County elementary school is over, and from now on, drivers will be paying the price for speeding.

Drivers going through the Moseley Elementary School zone on Magnolia Green Parkway will see the flashing lights of the speed camera during arrival and dismissal time. That means the school zone speed limit is enforced, and the camera is taking photos of speeding cars.

The speed cameras monitor every passing car’s speed. For anyone going 10 miles over the school zone’s posted speed limit during arrival and dismissal hours, the camera will record photos and videos, documenting the date, time, location, license plate and speed.

The driver will then be mailed a $100 citation.

Chesterfield County said it's installing the speed cameras to protect students and enhance road safety. The county did a study in 2023 that found drivers going more than 10 miles over the speed limit in school zones was a “significant issue.”

The school zone speed limit at Moseley Elementary is enforced from 8:55 to 9:55 a.m. and again between 3:25 and 4:25 p.m.

As of Wednesday, March 12, several other schools’ speed cameras were still in a grace period and hadn’t started ticketing drivers yet. Those schools include the following:

  • Cosby High School
  • Ecoff Elementary School
  • Reams Road Elementary School
  • Swift Creek Elementary School
