Driver hospitalized after fiery tractor-trailer crash on I-295 South in Hanover

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A tractor-trailer driver is in the hospital after a fiery crash on Interstate 295 South between Henrico and Hanover counties on Friday.

Just after 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, troopers with Virginia State Police were called to I-295 southbound just east of its interchange with I-95 -- right along the Hanover-Henrico county line -- for report of a vehicle fire.

When they arrived, troopers found a tractor-trailer on the left shoulder that was fully engulfed in flames.

Investigators determined that a tractor-trailer was moving south in the left lane when its driver accelerated and tried to change lanes. According to state police, the tractor-trailer then hit a 2022 Tesla sedan on its driver's side rear.

The tractor-trailer driver lost control due to the impact, per state police. The truck veered off the left shoulder, hit and broke through the guardrail and entered the nearby wooded area, where it crashed into several trees and caught fire.

The tractor-trailer driver was taken to an area hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. No other injuries were reported to police.
