Hanover Fire-EMS shares carbon monoxide safety tips after multiple calls

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Hanover County Fire-EMS is reminding residents about carbon monoxide safety after responding to several calls where crews found the substance in homes.

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, Hanover County Fire-EMS shared on social media that crews had responded to several calls over the past week where carbon monoxide was found in homes.

In each case, officials said residents luckily had working carbon monoxide detectors.

Officials recommended taking the following safety steps to avoid carbon monoxide exposure:

  • Have your HVAC system serviced every year to keep it running safely.
  • Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home with new batteries.
  • Install home heating appliances according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Never use gasoline-powered tools or engines indoors.
  • Avoid warming up your vehicle in the garage.

Hanover Fire-EMS urged residents to be aware of the following signs of carbon monoxide exposure:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Confusion or unusual tiredness

Anyone who feels these symptoms and suspects that they may be due to carbon monoxide should get outside immediately and call 911.

In addition, if you smell gas or think there may be a leak, Hanover Fire-EMS said to leave immediately and call 911.
