Hanover high schooler extinguishes HVAC fire before fire crews arrive

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A high schooler in Hanover extinguished a HVAC unit fire before crews arrived on Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, Hanover Fire-EMS posted that they had responded to the 6000 block of Peace Road in Hanover for an outdoor HVAC unit fire that had also spread into the crawl space of the home.

Once on the scene, they found that Brenenn, a student at Mechanicsville High School, had used two fire extinguishers to help put out the HVAC fire before crews arrived.

Hanover Fire-EMS then put out the remaining fire that had spread to the crawl space before it could continue spreading into the home.

Due to the high schooler's quick actions, the damage was small, and no one was injured.

Hanover Fire-EMS said that fire extinguishers are very effective for small fires when used correctly. Remember to make sure that you have a clear escape route before fighting a fire.

It's also important to remember PASS:

  • Pull
  • Aim
  • Squeeze
  • Sweep

If the fire is not controlled and extinguished quickly, immediately evacuate and call 911.
