Hanover man dies 3 weeks after he was hit by driver accused of DUI, ejected from truck

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Hanover County man has died three weeks after a driver accused of driving under the influence (DUI) struck the truck he was riding in, causing him to be ejected. At about 5:40 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024, deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office were called to the 6200 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike for the report of a two-vehicle crash. According to authorities, the driver of a 2019 Ford Edge was moving west on Mechanicsville Turnpike at a high rate of speed when they hit a 2007 Dodge Ram that was trying to turn into Sam's Express Car Wash from the eastbound side of the road. Two people were in the Dodge Ram at the time of the crash -- its unidentified driver and their passenger, 54-year-old Teddy Randall Barton of Hanover. Due to the force of the impact, Barton was ejected from the truck. Man wanted in connection to shooting at Shamrock Pub in Chesterfield Both the driver and Barton were taken to an area hospital with severe injuries. Three weeks later, on Jan. 12, authorities were told that Barton had died. The driver of the Ford Edge, whom authorities did not identify, was arrested and charged with DUI at the time of the crash. "Investigators are still collecting information to determine the circumstances that led to this crash and are asking for the public’s assistance if they witnessed the crash or the moments leading up to impact," the sheriff's office said in its Jan. 31 press release.
