Hanover parents react to unexpected closure of Mechanicsville preschool

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Several parents and teachers expressed frustration after The Nest School in Mechanicsville unexpectedly closed its doors early this morning.

The decision followed a series of confusing events, beginning with a snow day notice on Thursday that left many parents concerned.

Parents say the situation began when the preschool’s director, Deanna Whalen, sent out a message on Thursday, Feb. 20, asking families to keep their children home due to winter weather that prevented nearly two dozen teachers from making it to work.

However, several hours later, another message from the school board informed families that Whalen was no longer employed at the school.

Kristin Owen, a parent at the school, said the decision baffled her.

“I was in complete shock because we really like her,” Owen said. “She’s by far been the best director we’ve had. Any time there are issues, she’ll resolve them.”

A spokesperson for the school sent a statement to 8news regarding recent events:

“We do not comment on internal personnel matters. This morning’s operational changes were unfortunate and unanticipated, and we worked quickly to communicate with families as soon as possible. We will be open and ready to welcome children on Monday.”

However, teacher Shayla Bullock claimed that Whalen’s dismissal was related to her handling of the snow day situation, where she reportedly had difficulty getting approval for her decisions.

“Last week when we had the slight little winter storm, she was constantly sending [Nest School board] updates and they just kind of dismissed what she was saying,” Bullock said. "That’s why she felt the need to make the choice herself.”

The fallout from the controversy saw several staff members, including the assistant director, quit. Bullock said that most teachers did not show up for work today, leaving the preschool without adequate staff.

In response to the closure, The Nest School sent a letter to families apologizing and assuring them that Whalen, the assistant director, and other staff members had agreed to return to their roles. The school has confirmed it will reopen on Monday, and families will receive a tuition credit for today’s closure.
