Hanover residents can apply for summer cooling assistance this weekend
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- To stay cool this summer, residents in Hanover County can now apply for financial assistance, starting Sunday.
Applications for the annual cooling assistance program will be accepted from Sunday, June 15, to Friday, Aug. 15, through the Department of Social Services, with support offered on a first-come, first-served basis, according to a release from the department.
The program, which is part of the Virginia Energy Assistance Program, assists low-income households with their energy needs.
A household must include at least one of the following qualifications:
- A child under 6
- An adult 60 or older
- An individual with a disability
"Eligibility is based on the household’s total monthly income before taxes, and income documentation is required for all household members," the Department of Social Services said. "The electric bill must either be in the name of one of the residents or show a service address that matches the applicant’s address."
The department also added that eligible households can also receive assistance for the following:
- Paying electric bills to operate cooling equipment
- Covering security deposits for electricity
- Repairing central air-conditioning systems or heat pumps
- Purchasing and installing window-unit air conditioners
- Buying whole-house fans, including ceiling or attic fans
According to the release, before taxes, income documentation is required for qualifying households can receive more than one of these types of assistance.
Renters should get approval from their landlords for any changes or improvements to qualify for the program.
Residents can apply online when they click here or by calling 855-635-4370. But the county said that printed applications are available using this document and at the Department of Social Services, located at 12304 Washington Highway in Hanover.
