Hanover’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget proposal maintains low tax rate
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Hanover County's Fiscal Year 2027 budget proposal is focusing on schools and public safety while maintaining the lowest tax rate among the largest localities in the region.
The budget was proposed by Hanover County administrator John A. Budesky to the board of supervisors on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
Overall, the $427 million General Fund budget reflects a 3.3% increase over the current year while continuing a focus on schools, public safety, infrastructure and workforce competitiveness, per a county release.
Additionally, the real estate tax would remain at 81 cents per $100 assessed value, making it the lowest throughout the Richmond-area's largest localities.
Around 60% of the General Fund budget would go toward education and public safety, featuring $5.6 million in local funding for operations related to Hanover County Public Schools.
The budget also includes increased funding for Pamunkey Regional Jail operations and will continue with staffing investments for several public safety departments throughout a five-year plan.
The county is encouraging community engagement, and residents are asked to share input through the following avenues:
- Call or email board members and county administration at ctyadm@hanovercounty.gov or 804-365-6005
- Attend board member town hall meetings
