Happy National Arbor Day: Notable trees in Richmond area
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- In celebration of National Arbor Day, here's a list of some notable tree peeping spots in and around the Richmond area.
Hollywood Cemetery
The trees within Hollywood Cemetery do more than provide shade for famous gravesites -- they are native trees to Virginia and hold historic importance as well. The notability of the trees even allowed the land to become a recognized arboretum back in 2017, according to the cemetery's website.
Some of the types of trees people can see while walking through the cemetery include, as listed by the website -- ginkgos, magnolias, sycamores and oaks. For more information, and to plan your visit, click here.
Bryan Park
While on the topic of viewing trees that are native to Virginia, people can also visit Bryan Park, which houses large oaks, loblolly pines, sycamores, dogwoods and more, according to the Friends of Bryan Park website.
The site also speaks to the importance of planting native trees, as they show more resistance to disease and require less watering due to the fact that they adapt to local soil and climate.
Maymont's Arboretum
Although it is important to appreciate native plants, of which Maymont houses many, what sets this arboretum apart from the rest is its over 200 exotic species of trees and plants, according to the Maymont website.
Some of these exotic trees, such as the False Larch, come all the way from Japan, while others like the Persian Ironwood come from regions near Iran, according to Maymont. To learn more about where these trees came from, click here.
