Hashmi will be Virginia’s first Muslim lieutenant governor

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Current Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D-Chesterfield) will be the first Muslim woman to serve as Virginia's lieutenant governor, according to the Associated Press.

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, Virginians selected Hashmi to be their next lieutenant governor. As of 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, she has 53.2% of the vote, leading her Republican opponent -- former Richmond radio host John Reid -- by a 7-point margin.

A former teacher, Hashmi has been a trailblazer throughout her legislative career, becoming the first Muslim and first Asian-American to hold any statewide office in Virginia when she was elected to its Senate in 2020. She won her nomination for this year's lieutenant governor race over five other possible candidates.

Reid's candidacy was equally historic, as he became the first openly gay person to be selected as the nominee for a statewide office by either party in Virginia's history. He and Hashmi polled closely throughout the election season.
