Henrico bridge shut down ‘until further notice’ due to power outage

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A bridge over Interstate 64 in Henrico County has been shut down "until further notice" due to a power outage.

As of about 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, Skipwith Road at the bridge over I-64 -- located between Anoka Road and Wistar Street -- is closed due to a power outage impacting its traffic light.

According to county officials, both the Henrico County Department of Public Works and the Henrico County Police Division have determined that this outage has made Skipwith Road unsafe to travel.

Ongoing bridge rehabilitation work -- which began in the spring of 2023 and was originally meant to be completed by the fall of 2024 -- had already restricted travel on the bridge, limited to two-way alternative traffic directed by temporary traffic signals.

The power outage, in addition to said construction work, resulted in this closure.

County officials said there is no estimated timeframe for reopening the road. In the meantime, drivers are asked to use alternate routes.

"The county and Dominion Energy are working to restore power to additional traffic lights in the western part of the county," the county said. "Those intersections remain open. Motorists should treat them as a four-way stop."

Per a Facebook post, those intersections include:

  • Glenside Drive and Forest Avenue
  • Patterson Avenue at Horsepen Road

As of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dominion Energy reported that 9,627 homes and businesses were without power.
