Henrico County to announce new park near Maybeury Elementary after community push
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Henrico County leaders will formally announce plans on Monday for a new park along Patterson Avenue, thanks to overwhelming community support for preserving green space in the Tuckahoe area.
Tuckahoe District Supervisor Jody K. Rogish will announce the new park at noon on Monday, Aug. 4, at Maybeury Elementary School.
The park will be built on a 6.1-acre property between Maybeury Elementary School and the Tuckahoe Family YMCA, a site that more than 400 residents petitioned to save from development. Many of them asked the county to turn the space into a neighborhood park with trails and a playground, while keeping it largely natural.
Hosted by the county’s Division of Recreation & Parks, the event is free and open to the public, and will feature a bounce house, dunk tank, games and food trucks.
On July 22, the Henrico County Board of Supervisors voted to authorize the acquisition of the land for public park use — citing a clear need for more green space in the Tuckahoe area.
The project is still in its early stages, but county officials plan to include resident feedback in the design process to ensure the park reflects the community’s vision.
