Henrico officials respond to 46 calls for falls in icy conditions over 12 hours

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Henrico County officials responded to 46 calls reporting falls during icy conditions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to a spokesperson for the Henrico County Division of Fire, 46 calls for falls were placed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, amid icy conditions.

Although the ice is slippery, officials suggested using sand, kitty litter, oil dry, oatmeal or other similar materials to spread on the ice and get traction to prevent slipping.

In addition, Chesterfield County officials on Tuesday recommended the following steps to residents after seeing an increase in slip-and-fall calls:

  • Walk slowly and carefully, like a penguin, slow with your arms out
  • Wear shoes with good traction
  • Use handrails when available
  • Avoid shaded areas where ice can be harder to spot
