Henrico sees over 40 crashes amid second winter storm of the season

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- There have been dozens of crashes across Henrico County on Monday as the second snowstorm of the season hits Virginia, police say.

As of about 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, the Henrico County Police Division has responded to over 40 crashes amid this wintry weather.

It's the snowy and icy conditions that caused the majority of those crashes, police said.

Roadways are expected to remain hazardous into Tuesday, as an overnight refreeze will keep the pavement slick and icy. Police are warning drivers to be especially cautious of sheets of black ice.

"We encourage folks to stay off the roads if possible," Henrico Police said.

If you must go out, Henrico Police asks that you be extremely cautious. Here's a few tips to help you arrive safely:

  • Clear the snow off your car, including your lights, before you leave
  • Make sure those lights are on while you drive to increase visibility for you and other drivers
  • Drive more slowly and adjust as needed for the road conditions
  • Be especially careful when driving over bridges, overpasses and shady spots, as black ice is more likely to form there
  • Increase your following distance
  • Brake gently and brake early
  • Move over for emergency vehicles and disabled vehicles

"Our partners with Henrico County Public Works & Public Utilities are working around the clock to ensure our roadways are clear, especially for our first responders," police said.
