Henrico students to explore local issues on Student Government Day
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Henrico County Public School students are set to explore their local government, present community research projects and more at this year's Henrico County Student Government Day.
The 66th celebration is set to take place on Wednesday, April 9, with about 68 students from nine Henrico County Public Schools in attendance.
Seven students will highlight what they have learned or present projects exploring a specific issue affecting the county, with topics to include:
- Diversity in recruiting for law enforcement positions
- Affordable housing campaigns
- School overcrowding
- Streetscape proposal for Azalea Avenue
“Student Government Day is an impactful experience, offering high school seniors a hands-on opportunity to explore the world of local government,” said Victoria Davis, event coordinator for Henrico’s Outreach & Engagement Agency.
According to a press release, students will spend the day with county officials to learn more about their roles and responsibilities, as well as programs and services that will be provided to residents and the community.
Students will not only have the opportunity to register to vote if eligible but will also have the opportunity to tour Jail West, the Henrico Sports & Events Center and the county's data center.
Students in attendance will present their mock projects during a mock meeting with the Board of Supervisors that will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Henrico County Government Center.
