‘History and Stories: Lifted by Legacy’ kicks off with opening reception, celebrates Black History Month

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — 8News' second annual Black History Month art exhibit is officially back!

The 8News team, including anchors Deanna Allbrittin and Heather Hope, visited the "History and Stories: Lifted by Legacy" exhibit on Friday, Jan. 23, to see the work of our photojournalists and local artists on display at the Art Works gallery in Manchester.

This exhibition is a collaboration between 8News and the Black American Artists’ Alliance of Richmond.

After the opening reception, guests and attendees had time to explore the shifting perspectives between how journalists record history and how artists interpret it through a meaningful display of colorful works throughout the gallery.

Richmond resident Alanna King, who attended the exhibit Friday night, said she was excited to see "Lady E," also known as the "Duchess of the Blues," featured in this year's exhibit.

"I was so excited to know that there was going to be something in our community to honor that and to honor how her history has been impactful, and also the way that the journalists have been impactful in covering stories like hers," King said.

8News appreciates the help of Virginia State University, which sponsored the show and helped us bring a bigger, more impactful version of the exhibit to life after a successful show last year.

Community members are invited to visit the exhibit at Art Works, 320 Hull Street Road, now through Feb. 21. Proceeds from the exhibit will support arts programs at the Boys and Girls Club's Southside location.

Art Works is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit History and Stories: Lifted by Legacy.
