Homicide suspect in Prince Edward in custody after Roanoke murder, shooting officer

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A homicide suspect is in custody on Sunday after officials said he shot a Farmville police officer less than 24 hours after reportedly murdering someone in Roanoke.

According to officials, the pursuit began at around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 29, following a sighting of the suspect near Prince Edward Highway -- Route 460 -- and Hixburg Road.

On Sunday morning, residents within a 5-mile radius of Prince Edward Highway and Hixburg Road were advised to shelter in place, lock their doors and remain inside their homes.

Officials said the suspect, 24-year-old Rayjuan A. Calloway, fired at the officer and ran down Hixburg Road.

As of 1:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said that Colloway was in custody, and residents no longer have to shelter in place.

Calloway is the suspect in the murder of 55-year-old Israel Calloway that occurred in the evening of Saturday, June 28, in the City of Roanoke, per state police.

Calloway was located in the area of Route 460 and Sulpher Spring Road in Prince Edward and taken into custody without incident.

According to Farmville Police, the officer is "injured," but his vehicle is damaged.

Multiple local and state law enforcement agencies were called to this investigation, according to authorities.
