Hopewell launches citywide road assessment for smoother, safer streets
HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- Hopewell is launching a thorough review of all of its roadways in an effort to make streets both smoother and safer.
During its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Hopewell City Council approved a resolution greenlighting a citywide road and asphalt assessment.
All city streets will be evaluated using a "Pavement Condition Index (PCI)" and scored on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 being the poorest pavement condition and 100 being the best. Pavement distress like cracking, rutting and potholes will all be documented.
Hopewell officials hope to use this information to inform data-driven maintenance and rehabilitation of the city's streets.
The assessment is expected to take about four months to complete, the city said.

Hopewell's next paving operation will take place in the Danville Street area. Some other paving projects were completed earlier this year, including work in the Mansion Hills and Kings Court areas.
"Our goal is to ensure smoother and safer roads for residents as they travel throughout the city for their daily activities," said Hopewell Mayor Johnny Partin in a statement.
