How to apply for a REAL ID before May deadline?
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The new year brings new travel plans for Central Virginians, but before travelers take flight officials want to ensure they have the proper identification to make it to their destination. In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to implement identification standards across the country. These standards establish minimum security requirements for license issuance and production. The Act, directly impacts domestic travelers requiring people to have a REAL ID to board. The deadline for travelers to obtain a REAL ID has faced several delays. The newest deadline is set for May 7, 2025. Keep in mind, keeping a traditional form of identification pass the early May deadline does not stop you from flying domestically. If you choose not to apply for a REAL ID you will need to have an alternate form of federally accepted identification. In September of 2024, TSA officials proposed a rule to provide a two year extension in enforcement. While the enforcement deadline of May 5, 2027 would not extend the REAL ID deadline, it would implement card enforcement in phases allowing flexibility for agencies.
