How to stay safe as a pedestrian, following four deadly incidents in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The push for more pedestrian and driver safety has continued after the fourth pedestrian was hit and killed in Richmond in less than a month.

Richmond Police is still investigating all the incidents since the first deadly one on Dec. 27. Kids and Car Safety Founder and President Janette Fennell said these incidents can happen to anyone. She offered some advice on how to stay safe as a pedestrian.

"I don't want you to think these are unusual because pedestrian deaths is rising like we've never seen it before," Fennell said.

Conversations have sparked on 8News's social media after these incidents, some discussed the pedestrians' and drivers' responsibilities.

"It is a shared responsibility, and it's important for people to understand that. Children as well, because they think, because they can see the vehicle, or they can see the driver, that the driver can see them. Many times — many times — that's not the case."

Fennal had her own tips for pedestrians to follow.

"Put your phone down and your head up," Fennell said. "Maybe don't have music blaring in your ears, so you can't pick up on some sensory noises that might be happening. You should try to make eye contact, so the driver knows that you're moving forward and, in many cases, have the right of way."

Fennell also said for drivers to look out for "blind zones," extending 10 feet to the side, 50 feet behind and 30 feet in front of vehicles.
