How to vote early in Virginia for the November 2025 General and Special Election

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Early in-person voting for Virginia's Nov. 4, 2025, General and Special Election begins on Friday, Sept. 19. Here's what you need to know to cast your ballot.

What will be on the ballot?

Those voting in Virginia's Nov. 4, 2025, General and Special Election will be selecting from the following statewide offices:

Also on the ballot will be candidates for both the Virginia House of Delegates and local offices. These differ based on your registered address.

How can I cast my vote early?

Early in-person voting spans from Friday, Sept. 19, through 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. To vote early, or day of, on Nov. 4, you must be registered to vote.

To register, check on your status or change your voter information, visit the Virginia Department of Elections' website.

Once you are registered and ready to vote early in person, you will need to find your early voting office location.

All localities in Virginia offer early in-person voting, with each location set by individual localities. Some jurisdictions offer early voting locations other than the general registrar's office.

For all early voting and ballot dropbox information, contact the general registrar's office for the jurisdiction where you are registered.

You can find your general registrar's office by visiting the early voting office locations webpage on the department's website and selecting your locality from the dropdown menu.

Before heading to your early voting location, make sure you bring an acceptable form of ID. If you forget your ID, you can also sign a statement confirming your ID at the polls.

How can I vote absentee?

If you'd like an absentee ballot to be mailed to you, you can apply through 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24. Your request must be received by your local registrar's office by 5 p.m.

In Virginia, you do not need to provide a reason for requesting an absentee ballot. They are available to anyone who requests one.

Once you have filled in your absentee ballot, you can either return it to your local registrar's office by 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 or by submitting it at a drop-off location. Drop-off location information will be provided on your absentee ballot mailing.

Virginians can also opt to automatically receive an absentee ballot for all future elections. To do so, you must sign up for the permanent absentee list by applying online or by paper application.

Virginia residents can also vote through emergency absentee voting due to hospitalization, illness, other emergency, or an unexpected obligation. For more information and procedures, visit the absentee voting webpage.
