Hundreds of protestors rally in Richmond against ICE shooting of Minneapolis mother

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Cries of outrage continued to spread across the nation after ICE fatally shot a Minneapolis mother, Renee Good, last Wednesday.

On Saturday, Jan. 10, hundreds met in the heavy rain at the Maggie Walker Memorial Plaza on W. Broad Street to condemn immigration enforcement.

People spoke out against what's considered by some as an act of war and genocide.

The Party of Socialism and Liberation, 50501, RVA Indivisible and Richmond Defense and Punks for Liberation organized the demonstration together. They demanded divestment from immigration enforcement.

"We do not want our money going toward ripping our communities apart. We want them put into our communities. We want to be educated. We want to be fed. We want to be housed. We want health care," a demonstrator who spoke at to the rally said.

People chanted "shame" on the White House and immigration officials. The protestors on Broad Street considered Good's death a relentless assault.

"We won't put up with ICE!" protestors shouted.

President Donald Trump and his homeland security secretary, Kristi Noem, still believe the shooting was reasonable. They said the ICE agent feared for his life after he moved to the front of Good's car while the car was moving forward.

"We recognize that he acted according to his training. He acted appropriately to protect his life and the life of his colleagues," Secretary Noem said this week.

8News spoke with Te'Shaun Cleckley, a demonstrator who attended the protest and is hoping that the shooting will spark conversations about the future of the U.S.

"We have to ask ourselves, 'what does a country that actually stands for liberty and justice for everyone look like?'" Cleckley said. "What does it look like? Militarized police throwing people on the ground, shooting them in the face, kicking them over? Or does it look like 'love?'"
