‘I pray for his family’: Residents shocked after deadly pedestrian crash in Henrico
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — News of a deadly crash on West Broad Street has landed in the ears and phones of many across Henrico County.
"All I can think about is their family ... they're not coming home," said Mitchell Price of Henrico County. "It's a bad way to start the week. God bless them."
According to the Henrico County Police Division, at 8:35 p.m. on Monday, April 28, officers responded to the intersection of West Broad Street and Pemberton Road for a reported pedestrian crash.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 60-year-old Thomas Wayne Bodden of Henrico County with obvious signs of trauma down in the road.
A preliminary investigation indicated that, as Bodden was crossing West Broad Street, he was hit by an SUV, which caused him to fall into the other lane. Bodden was then hit by another vehicle. He died at the scene.
Police say both alcohol and dark clothing on behalf of Bodden were believed to be factors that played a part in the crash.
“I pray for his family -- again, it’s very unfortunate," said Junie Clayton of Henrico County. “I have kids, I have grandkids now … I always think about it being one of my family members.”
Clayton told 8News that, in the past few months, there had been reports of other crash incidents in the same area.
According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles' (DMV) Traffic Records Electronic Data System (TREDS), three people were injured in a car crash at the same intersection in this past February.
In 2024, there were two crashes at the intersection. While there were no injuries, there was damage to surrounding property.
Police are still investigating this incident and are asking anyone with information to contact Crash Team Investigator T. Holmes at 804-501-5000.
