Inmate at Red Onion State Prison burns themself in January

WISE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Another inmate has burned themself at Red Onion State Prison, following six who reportedly did so last year, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The department said an inmate at Red Onion State Prison in Wise County burned themself on Jan. 12.

"The incident did not require outside medical treatment," said a department spokesperson.

On Nov. 27, 2024, the department said that "in recent months," six inmates at the same prison had burned themselves with improvised devices created by tampering with electrical outlets.

The department said it would not comment further on the matter.
