Installations to begin for speed tables on 3 Richmond roads

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Installations are set to begin next week for speed tables on three High Injury Network (HIN) corridors within the city of Richmond.

According to officials, the city's Department of Public Works (DPW) will start installing speed tables on Monday, Dec. 1 along Main Street, Ellwood Avenue and Cary Street

The project, which serves as part of Vision Zero efforts to prevent crashes and create safer streets throughout Richmond, will include:

  • Installations of multiple speed tables along each road
    • Cary Street between Arthur Ashe Boulevard and Harrison Street (three speed tables)
    • Ellwood Avenue between Arthur Ashe Boulevard and Thompson Street (two speed tables)
    • Main Street between Harrison Street and Arthur Ashe Boulevard (three speed tables)
  • New pavement markings and advance warning signs

City officials said that "speed tables are a proven tool that will help reduce speeds and prevent serious crashes." They serve as a physical encouragement to slow down, and can reduce speeds by 18% to 50% as well as reduce collisions by up to 28%, per a release.
