‘It’s about legacy’: Flying Squirrels hosts final Father’s Day celebration at The Diamond
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — For many families, Father’s Day at The Diamond has been a long-standing. This year the celebration carried special meaning — it was the last one at the ballpark before the Flying Squirrels move to their new home at CarMax Park next season.
Before Sunday’s game against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the field opened up for a special pregame catch.
“It’s about legacy,” said father Cody Yates. “It’s something that was passed down to me from my father and his father to him. I came here as a kid, now I’m doing the same for my son.”
Despite the gloomy weather, families made the most of the moment, playing catch, sharing laughs and enjoying the last Father’s Day at a stadium Richmond has called home for decades.
“Our big move next door to CarMax Park is going to be a beautiful transition,” said Flying Squirrels COO Ben Rothrock. “In terms of Father’s Day, this really puts a bow on what The Diamond has meant to this community.”
For many longtime fans, the nostalgia runs deep, “I’m a born and raised Richmond resident and I’ve been coming to this stadium since I was probably his age,” said Andy Bristow .“To have the opportunity to come out and throw the ball with him is an excellent experience.”
Many fathers said the tradition teaches values that extend far beyond the sport.
“It not only builds the relationship between me and my son,” said Valencio Graham, “but it also teaches values, rules and teamwork.”
While it may be bittersweet to see The Diamond go, the move to CarMax Park represents a new chapter and a chance to create fresh memories.
“Oh, I’m really excited,” said Yates. “It’s pretty cool to see something like that here in Richmond. Something new. It’ll be something my son can pass down to his kids and his brother.”
Flying Squirrels officials say traditions like the pregame catch on the field will continue at CarMax Park.
