Jones announces candidacy for Senate District 15 after Hashmi selected as next lieutenant governor

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- After Virginia voters selected current Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D-Chesterfield) to be the next lieutenant governor, opening her spot for Senate District 15, Del. Mike Jones (D-Richmond) has announced his candidacy.

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, Virginians selected Hashmi to be their next lieutenant governor, defeating her Republican opponent -- former Richmond radio host John Reid.

Her election created a vacancy for Senate District 15, for which Jones announced his candidacy on Thursday, Nov. 6, to be the Democratic nominee.

Voters will have the chance to have their voice heard in the upcoming special election for Senate District 15. The date has not yet been announced by the Virginia Department of Elections.
