Judges to sample over 620 wines, ciders and meads at Virginia Governor’s Cup
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- During the Virginia Governor's Cup, judges will sample over 620 Virginia wines, ciders and meads, with one wine bottle being crowned the winner.
According to Virginia Wine, the preliminary round will take course over three days, with each wine being tasted by six judges. This will reportedly be a single-blind tasing, meaning that judges only know the grape or category of a wine, but the vintage, winery and name are hidden.
Individual judges' scores will be averaged into one score after the lowest score is dropped.
The final round will take place over another three days, during which 12 judges will assess the highest ranking wines from the preliminary round. Each judge will sample all of the final round wines.
Each wine in the final round will get a final average score after lowest is dropped. The 12 wines with the highest average score will be named the "Governor's Cup Case." The wine with the highest overall score will be crowned the Governor's Cup Winner.
Organizers said that judges will use the 100 point scale, taking into account appearance, aroma, flavor, quality and commercial suitability.
In addition, Virginia cider will be judged in its own category using a 100 point scale.
This year's competition will be celebrated at the Virginia Governor's Cup Gala at Richmond's Main Street Station on March 13. Attendees will be able to taste all the gold medal winning wines and see the unveiling of this year's Governor’s Cup Case, Cup and Best in Show Cider winners.
