Kilmar Abrego Garcia held at Farmville Detention Center

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly deported to El Salvador and returned to Maryland, is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Virginia's Farmville Detention Center, according to a spokesperson.

An ICE spokesperson confirmed to 8News at 8:41 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26, that Abrego Garcia was being held at the Farmville Detention Center, located at 508 Waterworks Rd. in Prince Edward County.

Abrego Garcia, whose case has been highly publicized, was wrongly deported by ICE in March to his birth country of El Salvador despite a court order from 2019 that barred his deportation to the country due to fear of persecution.

Garcia was later brought back to the U.S. in June for criminal charges, and was released from criminal custody on Friday, Aug. 22, to his brother's custody in Maryland.

Following a rally, Abrego Garcia was detained by ICE in Baltimore on Monday, Aug. 25, and was then taken to the Virginia detention center.

Abrego Garcia faces a renewed effort of deportation, against which his attorneys filed a lawsuit until a court has heard his claim for protection.

Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, Abrego Garcia's immigration attorney, shared a statement online.

The government’s decision to re-detain Mr. Abrego Garcia is both unnecessary and cruel. After months of incarceration, he deserves the opportunity to remain safely at home with his family while his claims are fairly considered. Instead, ICE is once again rushing to deport him, potentially to countries where his safety cannot be assured. For this reason, our team has filed a new lawsuit demanding that the government refrain from deporting him anywhere unless and until a court has heard his claim for protection. Justice requires no less. Sandoval-Moshenberg

8News has reached out to Governor Glenn Youngkin, Sen. Tim Kaine and Sen. Mark Warner for statements or comments on Abrego Garcia's detainment in the Commonwealth.

The Farmville Detention Center was toured by Virginia Congressman Don Beyer just weeks prior, who described an "enormous medical burden."

December 2024 inspection of the facility found 19 violations of ICE detention standards, 12 of which were related to medical care. One repeat violation noted that some health care providers did not conduct mental health evaluations within 72 hours of referrals.
