Kwanzaa expo to showcase vegan vendors, Black-owned businesses in Chesterfield County

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- For 8News’ Spirit of the Season series, we’re highlighting holiday events in the Richmond area. On Monday, we learned about a Kwanzaa expo coming to Chesterfield County later in December. In the morning on Monday, Dec. 16, 8News Anchors Delaney Hall and Autumn Childress spoke with Andrea Daughtry, the founder and executive director of For The Fem In You and Ease Claiborne, the program director. For someone who may be unfamiliar with Kwanzaa, Daughtry gave an overview of what it's all about. "Kwanzaa is in its 60th year of being celebrated," Daughtry said. "Really, literally it's just a time to make sure that Black principles are celebrated. We have cooperative economics, which is my favorite, which we get to celebrate during this season. It's just a time to get together and focus on celebrating Black excellence and Black people, just period." In terms of what attendees can expect at the Black and Free Kwanzaa Expo, Daughtry said there's an abundance of food and vendors "There are over 20 vendors, all amazing vegan food, because we love to prioritize wellness when we are doing these expos, so Black-owned businesses, we have performing artists, we have African dancers, it's going to be amazing," Daughtry said. Kehillah Hannukah to come to Chesterfield County in late December Daughtry said 500 free RSVPs have been given away, and now, it's a $7 donation to attend, adding though, that no one would be turned away. Daughtry explained that For the Fem in You is an organization focused on creating safe spaces for women of color in the small business and arts sector. "We make sure that through advocacy they have visibility and community programming, public programs, that's what we're all about," Daughtry said. Daughtry added that the expo is fundraising to acquire a space for the organization in Richmond's Downtown area, which she said will hopefully include a studio, a vegan community kitchen, an art gallery and a co-working space. This is the event's second year. The Kwanzaa Expo will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, at Beulah Recreation Center, located at 6901 Hopkins Road in Chesterfield County.
