LIST: Authorities offer tips for safe trick-or-treating this Halloween
LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Local authorities are offering a list of tips on how to ensure your family's trick-or-treating experience this Halloween is full of safe, spooky fun. On Monday, Oct. 28, the Louisa County Sheriff's Office offered the following tips it says will help make for a Halloween night with no real scares: Look out for trick-or-treaters. Drivers should be aware of heavy pedestrian traffic as children and families take part in Halloween festivities. Take extra caution when driving. Make sure your Halloween best is also visible. Consider bright and/or reflective costumes to make sure you can be seen. If that's not possible, as many costumes can be dark, make sure to carry a flashlight and/or glowsticks. Make sure your Halloween best is also comfortable and safe. Wear comfortable shoes. Avoid masks if possible, as they can make you harder to see and can be hard to breathe in -- try face paint instead. If carrying props, ensure that they're soft and/or flexible, so that they're safe to walk around with. Remember "stranger danger." Remind your kids that they should only approach well-lit homes when looking for treats and that they should never go inside a stranger's home. The best trick-or-treating strategy is to have a clear plan and travel in groups. Don't let your treats become tricks. Inspect all candy before eating. If anything you collected is not packaged, appears open and/or looks tampered with, throw it away. Be cautious with fire. If you have candles in your jack-o-lanterns or other decorations, don't leave them unattended. Additionally, ensure they're placed away from anything flammable. The sheriff's office encouraged families to talk to their children about these tips and to overall be aware of their surroundings. Deputies will be out and about on Halloween to help ensure a safe Halloween experience. LIST: Trunk or Treat events in the Richmond area The Louisa County Sheriff's Office added that its own Annual Halloween Drive will be held at its office on Halloween from 5 to 8:30 p.m., for those interested in picking up some more free candy.
