LIST: Central Virginia schools closed, going virtual Tuesday due to wintry weather
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Many Central Virginia school districts will be closed on Tuesday due to icy road conditions following the first winter storm of 2026.
Snowfall began the afternoon of Saturday, Jan. 24, then transitioned into sleet and freezing rain, which continued until about midnight on Sunday, Jan. 25. While the precipitation has stopped, many roads remain icy, creating hazardous driving conditions across Central Virginia.

After most Central Virginia school districts closed on Monday, Jan. 26, the following divisions will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 27:
- Richmond Public Schools
- Chesterfield County Public Schools
- Henrico County Public Schools
- Colonial Heights Public Schools
- Cumberland County Public Schools
- Lancaster County Public Schools
- Essex County Public Schools
- Prince Edward County Public Schools
- Orange County Public Schools
- Stafford County Public Schools
- Fredericksburg City Public Schools
- Spotsylvania County Public Schools
The following Central Virginia school districts will shift to virtual learning on Tuesday:
- Hanover County Public Schools
- Caroline County Public Schools
- King and Queen County
- Sussex County Public Schools
- Middlesex County Public Schools
- Northumberland County Public Schools
- Lancaster County Public Schools
