LIST: Memorial Day events in the Richmond area

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As Memorial Day approaches, people are offered a day of reflection to celebrate and remember the nation's fallen service men and women.

In the Richmond area alone, there are several events community members can attend to honor Virginians who may have made the sacrifice.

Commonwealth's Memorial Day Ceremony

The Virginia War Memorial will be hosting the 69th annual Commonwealth's Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26, starting at 11 a.m. There will be several speakers and government officials in attendance, as well a music provided by the 29th Division Band of the Virginia National Guard. Say Their Names Marathon

Shortly after the Commonwealth's Memorial Day Ceremony, the Virginia War Memorial will also be hosting an event allowing people the opportunity to say one of around 12,000 names of fallen Virginia veterans. The marathon will start at 12:30 p.m. and is expected to last until 12:30 a.m. Registration is required, so be sure to click here for more information and to secure a time slot.

National Memorial Day Ceremony

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hosts public Memorial Day ceremonies at over 130 national cemeteries throughout the country. One will be held at Cold Harbor National Ceremony in Hanover County starting at 11 a.m. on May 26. For more information, and a list of other participating cemeteries, click here.

Sandston Memorial Day Parade

Henrico County Recreation and Parks will be hosting a Memorial Day Parade through Sandston at 1 p.m. on May 26. The parade will start on Williamsburg Road where it intersects with Beulah Road, and will be followed by a block party at Sandston Recreation Area, with live music, activities and more.
