Local police departments to conduct active shooter training exercise at VCU in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Police Department and Richmond Police Department will hold an active shooter training exercise on Wednesday that will impact a portion of the university's Monroe Park Campus. The joint active shooter training exercise for the police departments will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, and take place in the 900 block of West Franklin Street at VCU's Office of the President. According to officials, the area of West Franklin Street will be closed starting at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, with any vehicle still parked on the street after this time to be towed. Community members can expect to see law enforcement and emergency personnel from multiple jurisdictions, including Richmond Police Department's SWAT, as well as law enforcement drones. Sidewalks in the area of West Franklin Street will remain open to foot traffic, with the exception of the sidewalk directly in front of the Office of the President, according to officials.
