Louisa County to host annual rabies clinic Sunday

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Louisa County is hosting its annual rabies clinic on Sunday, providing low-cost rabies and vaccinations to the public.

This year's spring rabies clinic will be held in the Louisa County Fairgrounds parking area, located at 208 Fredericksburg Avenue, from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, with an hour from 11 a.m. to noon reserved only for those who have preregistered.

According to the county's monthly newsletter, if rabies is contracted and left untreated in humans and animals, it will be fatal. When contracted, it must be treated within the first 72 hours.

The drive-through clinic -- which is a partnership between the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, Louisa County Animal Shelter, the Louisa Humane Society, Louisa Veterinary Service and Louisa CART -- will be a cash-only event, with vaccines priced at $15 per animal.

The county's website advises all guests and their pets to stay in their vehicles at all times, with dogs remaining on leashes and cats in carriers. Officials encourage participants to enter from Fredericksburg Avenue.

While preregistration for this event is now closed, extra vaccines will be available during the event while supplies last.
