Lunenburg Sheriff’s Office warns of fraudsters targeting residents
LUNENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of fraudsters posing as sheriff's office employees.
On Wednesday, Aug. 27, the sheriff's office issued an alert, saying that some residents have been receiving scam text messages.
According to authorities, the scammer in this scheme claims that the victim has "failed to appear in court" before telling them to pay a fine or risk further penalties.
The sheriff's office emphasized that these messages are fraudulent and that they would never demand payment through text messages.

"Those with a legitimate court matter will receive official documentation through proper channels and not through a text message," the sheriff's office said.
"These scammers are attempting to create fear and urgency in order to steal your money and personal information," said Sheriff Arthur Townsend Jr. "I urge our community to stay alert, verify before you act, and never send money or personal details in response to these texts. If you receive one of these messages, do not click any links; delete it immediately. Please share this information with your friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to these tactics."
Many counties have been hit with fraudsters seeking to scam money out of county residents. Most recently, scammers are posing as members of Chesterfield County's Planning Commission, asking residents for money.
