Man arrested after 33-year-old woman found shot dead just before her birthday in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 57-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death on Sunday of a 33-year-old woman, just before her 34th birthday.
At 9:33 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, officers with the Richmond Police Department were called to the 500 block of Hunt Avenue for a report of a person shot.
Once on the scene, officers found 33-year-old Johnnita Russell of Richmond with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. Officials confirmed that she died just before her 34th birthday.
Richmond Police detectives, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, arrested 57-year-old Michael Sprague of Richmond, who was then charged with shooting within an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the incident.
Sprague is also awaiting additional pending charges, according to officials.
The medical examiner will reportedly determine the cause and manner of death.
