Man charged with first-degree murder, arson after deadly incident in Petersburg
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — A man has been charged with first-degree murder and arson after a woman was found dead and another man critically injured during a welfare check at a Petersburg apartment last weekend.
At 7:23 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, officers with the Petersburg Bureau of Police were called to an apartment in the 2300 block of Navajo Court for a welfare check.
When they arrived, officers found a man with life-threatening injuries. They also found the body of a woman in another room.
Police said the male victim was taken to a local hospital, where he remained in critical but stable condition.

On Saturday, Nov. 29, police announced that an arrest had been made in connection with this incident.
The suspect, 47-year-old Calvin D. Butcher, has been charged with first-degree murder and arson. Butcher is being held without bond pending his court appearance, per officials.
