Man hit, killed by dump truck driver in Richmond crosswalk

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A man was hit and killed by the driver of a privately-owned dump truck while in a Richmond crosswalk on Tuesday. This marks the city's third pedestrian death in just a week and a half.

At about 1:43 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, officers with the Richmond Police Department were called to the intersection of N. Harrison and W. Leigh streets -- near Carver Elementary School -- for report of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Investigators believe the involved pedestrian, a man in his 60s, was crossing Leigh Street in a crosswalk when he was hit by a privately-owned dump truck that was turning onto Leigh Street. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police told 8News that, using both cameras and witness statements, investigators determined that the driver of the dump truck -- an unidentified man -- had a green light, but not a protected green arrow, meaning he was meant to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

By contrast, the man he struck was heeding the crossing's pedestrian signal, which indicated he could walk.

The driver remained at the scene following the crash. He has not been charged at this time. However, a police spokesperson told 8News that charges could be forthcoming.

This is the third deadly pedestrian crash Richmond has seen since late December, with the second -- a hit-and-run that left a woman dead -- having taken place just three days prior to Tuesday's incident.

The first, which took place near City Hall on Dec. 27, 2025, involved the Valentine's longtime director Bill Martin, who died at a nearby hospital the day after he was struck.
