Man hospitalized in Chesterfield shooting after suspect believed they were attempting to break into vehicles

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield County Police Department has a suspect in custody after a man was found with a life-threatening gunshot wound on Thursday night.

At 11:55 p.m. on April 24, officers were called to the 2700 block of Addington Avenue after it was reported a person was attempting to break into vehicles.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been shot. Officers rendered aid to the man before he was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A release from police said that, following an investigation, officers determined that the suspect had shot the victim after "seeing what he believed to be a person attempting to enter vehicles in the immediate area."

According to police, the suspect in the shooting -- now identified as 32-year-old Alexander L.J. Manns -- was arrested and charged with aggravated malicious wounding and reckless handling of a firearm. Manns is currently being held at the Chesterfield County Jail.
