Man shot, killed by Virginia State Police trooper after pulling out knife following chase

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A North Carolina man was reportedly shot and killed by a Virginia State Police trooper after officials said he pulled out a knife and refused to comply with commands following a chase in Mecklenburg County.

At 3:57 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, Virginia State Police received a call about a suspicious situation along Highway 903 in Mecklenburg County.

When police arrived on scene, a vehicle took off and a police chase was initiated. During the pursuit, officials said the suspect vehicle crashed in an open field and the suspect then pulled out a knife while reportedly refusing to comply with the trooper's commands.

Police said the suspect -- identified as 39-year-old Derek C. Holland of the town of Cary in North Carolina -- was shot by a trooper and died at the scene.

According to police, the trooper involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Following the end of the investigation, officials said all evidence and information will be provided to the Mecklenburg County Commonwealth's Attorney.
