Man wanted out of Chesterfield shot in deputy-involved shooting in Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia State Police is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in the City of Fredericksburg where a man wanted out of Chesterfield County and a bystander were injured. At around 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, deputies from the Spotsylvania County Street Crimes Task Force attempted to apprehend a suspect wanted out of Chesterfield during a traffic stop at a gas station on the 3000 block of Plank Road in Fredericksburg. According to Virginia State Police, as deputies approached the suspect's vehicle, 37-year-old Lawrence D. Toler II, of Woodford, attempted to flee and backed into a deputy's vehicle. Authorities said Toler then pointed a gun at a deputy when multiple deputies discharged their service weapons. According to state police, Toler was shot along with a bystander who was standing outside of the gas station, and deputies immediately provided medical aid to both individuals. The bystander, identified as a man, was then transported to an area hospital to be treated for minor injuries and was reported to have been released later. Toler was also transported to the hospital where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident, according to authorities. State police said Toler was wanted out of Chesterfield County on multiple felony warrants and a firearm was found inside of his vehicle. The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Once state police completes its investigation, the criminal investigative file will be turned over to the Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney for review and adjudication, according to officials.
