‘MJ: The Musical’ premiers at Richmond’s Altria Theater
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- "MJ," the multiple Tony Award-winning musical centering Michael Jackson, is premiering at Richmond's Altria Theater. Richmond area residents and visitors can see the musical from Jan. 28 through Feb. 2 at the theater. 8News Anchors Autumn Childress and Delaney Hall spoke with Erik Hamilton, who plays the role of Jackson from when he was about 16 years old through his 20s, to learn more about the musical. Hamilton explained that he plays Jackson through the end of The Jackson 5 era, through the beginning of his solo career and during his 1994 "Victory Tour" era. As for what attendees can expect to see during the performance, Hamilton said it centers music and dancing, but also showcases a window into Jackson's life through storytelling. "With this show, you can expect all of your favorite hits that you know from Michael Jackson, you know, 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin',' 'Beat It,' 'Billie Jean,' 'Smooth Criminal,' all of those," Hamilton said. "But, in addition to that, it goes past just the moves and the sound of the star, and offers a rare look into the creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted Michael Jackson into legendary status."
