More than 700 graves found in Richmond’s Manchester neighborhood

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- More than 700 graves have been found in Richmond's Manchester neighborhood after a survey was conducted at a site.

According to a spokesperson for the City of Richmond, a draft report from a vendor conducting a Ground Penetrating Radar survey of 2313 Wise Street identified 742 graves -- with 472 probable and 270 possible.

"The accompanying research indicates that the site was established by the City of Manchester in 1857 and burials on the site pre-date the establishment of Maury Cemetery in 1874," the city spokesperson said.

Additionally, officials said the accompanying research, physical layout of the graves and historical record suggests the site was used as a military burial ground from 1861 to 1862.

Officials said records of the individuals buried at the site "do not exist," and the full report from the radar vendor will be released in the coming days.
