NASCAR’s Joey Logano teams up with STEP Richmond for back-to-school drive in Gilpin Court
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A back-to-school drive benefiting the Gilpin Court community will see a NASCAR champion partner with Strategies to Elevate People (STEP Richmond) to show support this weekend.
On Saturday, Aug. 16, 3x NASCAR champion Joey Logano will join STEP Richmond, a long-standing nonprofit serving the city's Gilpin Court public housing community at the grass lot between Charity and Federal, St. James, and N. 1st Street.
The organization serves the Gilpin Court community, which includes 783 housing units, over 1,100 children and an average household income of $9,300.
Its mission is reportedly to build community relationships through educational, employment and enrichment programs, per a release.
The event will include a meet and greet with Logano, backpack and school supply distribution, photo opportunities and a statement from Logano on supporting youth education.
The back-to-school drive is "one of STEP's signature seasonal programs," according to a release, and STEP hosts an annual resource fair where they distribute backpacks and school supplies to local children to "set them up for success as the new academic year begins."
