National Night Out for police-community relationship building returns to Greater Richmond area
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Greater Richmond area is joining the nationwide National Night Out (NNO) events with the purpose of growing awareness for crime and drug prevention.
For 40 years under the National Night Out program, block parties, ice cream socials and cook-outs have been held for police officers to hear concerns from the residents they serve and to offer resources.
The nationwide relationship-building event returns to the Greater Richmond area on Tuesday night, including in Hanover County, where the NNO presence has been among the top-rated by the National Association of Town Watch. Hanover officers will attend all 50 communities in the area hosting NNO events.
Hanover County Sheriff's Office sergeant Steve Wills explained that the greater the relationship, the lower Hanover's crime rate, which is currently 9.2 per 1,000 residents.
To that end, the sheriff's office will be doing demonstrations with several of its special teams and will be putting on a parade going through Chickahominy Middle School and going through the Kings Charter, Ashcake, Milestone and CoolWell subdivisions starting at 5:30 p.m.
Events are also happening in Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield, among other areas. Find more NNO events in Greater Richmond here.
