Neighbor reacts to child shot and killed at Petersburg complex

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — A six-year-old child is dead after a shooting at a Petersburg apartment complex.

On Tuesday, March 10, officers with the Petersburg Bureau of Police responded to a report of a person shot at Petersburg East Apartments in the 2300 block of Navajo Court around 10:30 p.m.

Police arrived to find the child suffering from a gunshot wound. They rushed them to the hospital where they later died.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family during this time,” said Chief Travis C. Christian in a press release. “This heartbreak tragedy also reminds us of all the critical importance of keeping firearms safe and secure and away from children.”

Detectives were still on the scene looking for answers.

Resident Kyjuan Edmunds said he heard about the shooting on social media.

“It’s just a sad situation that everybody needs to learn from,” Edmunds said. “It's a crazy neighborhood. But I mean, most of this stuff can really be avoided.”

There is no word yet on what caused this shooting or who else was involved.
