New traffic signals, pedestrian improvements coming to Richmond intersection
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Pedestrian improvements are coming to a Richmond intersection, including new traffic signals.
In early April, the city will begin a new traffic signal project at the intersection of Patterson Avenue and St. Christopher's Road, according to a March 31 press release from the city.
The new high-visibility traffic signals will have reflective backplates, improving both signal recognition and visibility, per the city -- particularly at night or in low-light conditions.
The city will also install high-visibility crosswalks, countdown pedestrian signal heads and curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as part of this $680,000 project.
Richmond to lower speed limit on city roadway to improve safety
These improvements are a part of Richmond's Vision Zero effort. Vision Zero is an international movement that aims to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries to zero.
“Every infrastructure improvement we make is grounded in Vision Zero,” said Richmond's transportation director Andy Boenau in the release. “This installation reflects our data-driven approach to identifying high-risk locations and delivering targeted solutions that make a difference for the community.”
Construction on this project is set to begin in early April and be completed by summertime, weather permitting.
While construction is underway, there will be intermittent lane and sidewalk closures. Drivers are asked to slow down in work zones or whenever they see orange cones, as well as give construction workers extra space.
