New animal shelter to come to Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Good news for furry friends in the Tri-Cities! A new animal shelter is set to come to Petersburg next year.

The City of Petersburg announced in a social post on Friday, Nov. 14, that a new animal care and control facility will be built at 1555 Flank Road. Officials said they plan to break ground on the project toward the end of the year.

Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham said the city worked with Gov. Glenn Youngkin's office to build the shelter.

The "state-of-the-art" facility is a "much-needed upgrade" from the city's 50-year-old shelter, bringing over 40 spaces for dogs and about 36 spaces for cats, per the announcement.

"It's a project that I've been working on for many, many years," said Petersburg Councilmember W. Howard Myers. "It's an opportunity for us to provide better care for these animals."

Officials said utility work is currently underway and construction is slated for spring 2026.
